Why should I hire a divorce lawyer?

Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by the court. People seeking to be divorced do consider applying for divorce themselves without engaging a lawyer. In other words, they will be applying for divorce as litigants-in-person. However, there is a risk in doing so.

In my experience as a divorce lawyer, clients usually come in thinking they know exactly what they want in their divorce. After going through the divorce consultation, however, they never fail to realise that they did not fully understand the implications of the divorce terms, or other matters which they needed to think about (eg. applying for a housing loan to buy over the matrimonial home) .

Furthermore, when you file for divorce on your own, you will have to file the divorce papers without the guidance of a lawyer. This usually leads to mistakes and frustrations, including spending hours waiting to file the divorce papers and forking out more money to re-file documents in the event of errors.
