What is child maintenance?

Parents are obliged to provide maintenance for the upbringing of their children until they turn 21, even after divorce. Children will be considered adults upon reaching the age of 21.

In contested divorce proceedings, the court will decide on the appropriate amount of maintenance for the children of the marriage by taking into account the money required for the children’s education and other living expenses.

In uncontested divorce proceedings, the divorcing spouses can mutually agree on the amount of child maintenance and even which of the divorcing spouse is to be responsible for the maintenance of the children of the marriage.

It is best to consult an experienced divorce lawyer who can guide you on the amount of child maintenance that is appropriate in your situation.
