What is a criminal offence?

A criminal offence can be thought of as an offence committed against the State.

The criminal offences in Singapore are mostly listed in statutes. The main statute for criminal offences is the Penal Code. Other important statutes which set out what are criminal offences include the Arms Offences Act, the Kidnapping Act and the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The statute provisions set out what the elements of each criminal offence are. You will be found guilty of the criminal offence that you are charged with if all the elements of the criminal offence that you are charged with are made out.
